Emergency Smoke & Fire Damage Cleanup Saves Denver Indoor Playground

Written by Sarah Chadwick | January 12, 2026

In December 2025, a fire broke out overnight in the back storage area of an indoor playground facility in Greenwood Village, Colorado. The fire was quickly contained, resulting in burn damage to a portion of the facility, though smoke and soot spread throughout the 17,000-square-foot space. The activation of the fire suppression system near the bathrooms and storage areas caused localized water damage. While most guest areas were structurally unaffected, extensive surface cleaning was required throughout the facility to remove smoke and soot residue and ensure the space was safe for visitors.

The facility remained closed on Thursday and Friday, creating urgent pressure as nearly two dozen birthday parties were scheduled for Saturday, December 13. Any continued closure would have resulted in lost revenue, canceled celebrations for families, and further disruption heading into the busy winter break period.

When the property management firm responsible for the facility learned of the fire, they referred CRC based on successful prior restoration work. The playground’s ownership contacted CRC immediately, trusting the strength of that recommendation and the proven partnership behind it. Although other mitigation companies arrived on site after the incident attempting to secure the work, the playground’s ownership ultimately chose CRC to restore the fire-damaged facility because of the credibility of the referral. That decision was reinforced by confidence in CRC’s proven expertise and capacity to respond at scale.

CHALLENGES AND OBJECTIVES

The fire and activation of the fire suppression system affected the back storage areas and bathrooms, while smoke spread into the main play areas and left a strong odor throughout the facility. Portions of the ceiling and acoustic panels in the affected areas were beginning to fail due to water exposure, and the bathrooms were heavily damaged and unusable, preventing the facility from reopening safely to guests.

The indoor playground also featured a four-level, 16-foot-tall play structure, creating a large, high-reach environment that required precise and detailed cleaning. This included overhead lighting, the tops of the structure, and the ball pit, where every individual ball required cleaning to remove soot and contamination. Contents in the storage areas, including toys, rubber balls, and candy, were also heavily impacted by smoke and water.

At the same time, 22 birthday parties were scheduled for Saturday, placing significant urgency on reopening the facility without compromising safety or quality. Staff had already been forced to cancel events on Thursday and Friday and were understandably emotional given the potential financial and reputational impact of further closures.

The core objectives were to stabilize the damaged areas, restore the facility quickly and safely, minimize operational downtime, and protect both revenue and guest experience during a critical business period.

HOW CRC RESPONDED

CRC mobilized immediately, arriving on site within thirty minutes of the emergency call. Within one hour of contract approval, a 50-person team was fully deployed and operational.

One of the first priorities was stabilizing the most affected areas. CRC installed temporary plastic containment walls to isolate the damaged bathrooms and back storage rooms, preventing cross-contamination and allowing cleaning to continue safely in the main play areas. This separation made it possible to progress restoration work efficiently while preparing the rest of the facility for reopening.

Crews then began high-reach cleaning of the four-level, 16-foot-tall play structure, using scissor lifts and safety harnesses to access overhead lighting, upper surfaces, and areas near the ceiling. The ball pit was meticulously addressed, with each individual ball cleaned to remove soot and contamination. Contents in the storage areas — including toys, rubber balls, and merchandise — were carefully sorted, cleaned, and restored.

To support reopening while reconstruction continued in the back-of-house areas, CRC coordinated the installation of temporary bathroom facilities and a generator so the playground could safely accommodate visitors and staff. Air scrubbers were deployed throughout the building to improve indoor air quality and reduce smoke odor.

CRC leveraged established vendor partnerships to rapidly secure dumpsters, supplemental labor, and specialized equipment, allowing mitigation, contents handling, and minor reconstruction activities to progress simultaneously. Throughout the project, CRC worked closely with ownership and insurance representatives, providing daily field reports and detailed documentation to maintain transparency and confidence in the restoration process.

Through coordinated manpower, strategic containment, and scalable resources, CRC restored the facility in less than 72 hours, allowing it to reopen for the scheduled weekend birthday parties.

Results

CRC restored the indoor playground in under 72 hours, ensuring all 22 scheduled birthday parties proceeded as planned on Saturday and families could safely enjoy the space. By leveraging a combination of in-house expertise and trusted vendor partnerships, CRC minimized downtime, prevented significant revenue loss, and maintained customer trust during a critical business period. Clear communication and thorough documentation kept ownership fully informed throughout the process.

By managing mitigation, contents cleaning, and reconstruction as a single, coordinated effort, CRC eliminated the need for multiple contractors or separate scopes of work. This streamlined approach simplified communication and allowed the project to progress smoothly without delays.

The successful restoration reinforced CRC’s reputation as a reliable and trusted partner, capable of delivering rapid, scalable results while supporting operational continuity and safety.
