Resort Relies on CRC for Rebuild After Cabin Fire

One spring, a fire broke out in a 1,300 sq. ft. log cabin rental at a resort near Branson, Missouri. The fire started near the chimney, in the ceiling. The fire department responded swiftly, bringing the main fire under control and spending two and a half hours on the scene extinguishing hot spots and salvaging belongings. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

While the fire was being contained, efforts to extinguish it caused water damage. The resort initially called in another contractor to address the damage. During this process, the contractor unnecessarily and improperly removed most of the roof structure. In doing so, they cut through a gable joist, which destabilized the structure. The roof opening was also improperly covered, leaving the cabin exposed to rain. This oversight caused significant secondary water damage and allowed microbial growth to develop throughout the structure. The cabin remained in this state for about a month with no further progress from the contractor.

When CRC arrived, the team quickly assessed the damage and identified critical hazards. One of the most urgent dangers was live electrical wires submerged in pooling water, creating a serious risk of electric shock for anyone entering the site.

CHALLENGES AND OBJECTIVES

This project posed unique and complex challenges. The fire and water damage left the cabin in critical condition, with the roof, joists, and flooring all needing significant repairs. Microbial contamination had spread due to the water damage and exposure to the elements, forcing the team to replace subflooring and fix damaged floor joists in the crawlspace. Adding to the difficulty, the remote location of the resort meant materials and crews had to come from outside the area.

The cabin’s design features also raised the stakes. It included custom details such as Canadian-imported ceiling logs, soft pine wood flooring, and handcrafted furnishings. These elements had to be replicated precisely to maintain the cabin’s rustic charm. As the resort operates at almost full capacity year-round, time was another pressing factor. The cabin had already been out of service for over a month. CRC needed to restore it quickly to minimize revenue loss, stay within the set budget, and ensure minimal disruption to other guests.

HOW CRC RESPONDED

CRC tackled the challenges head-on, focusing on speed, safety, and quality. The team designed and built a new permanent roof within five days to stabilize the structure and prevent further water damage. This quick work paved the way for the rest of the restoration. CRC removed all damaged materials, cleaned up microbial growth and soot, and ran air quality tests to ensure the cabin was safe. Structural repairs to the subflooring and floor joists were completed early in the process, allowing new electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems to be installed without delays. Precision and attention to detail defined the rebuild. CRC sourced a 26-foot gable beam in just 24 hours thanks to strong supplier relationships. Engineers and consultants worked closely with the team to keep the project on track. The cabin’s signature rustic aesthetic was recreated with custom soft pine floors, tongue-and-groove ceilings, and cedar shingles. The team stained and finished both the interior and exterior wood to match the original look. Every detail, including specialty light fixtures, was carefully handled to meet the client’s high standards. Throughout the project, CRC kept the work site clean and quiet, minimizing disruption for resort guests and staff.

Results

CRC’s swift and precise work paid off. The team fully restored the cabin and made it operational within three months, while coming in under budget. The client was thrilled with the results, especially with CRC’s clear and consistent communication throughout the project. By staying ahead of schedule and providing regular updates, CRC kept the process smooth and efficient. This project showcased CRC’s ability to handle complex restoration tasks with speed, a focus on safety, and exceptional craftsmanship.
